Dad stands trial over daughter’s mutilation
Police say Adem circumcised his daughter with scissors in his Duluth apartment, while someone else held the girl’s legs.
Authorities said the circumcision occurred sometime in 2001 but the mother didn’t discover it until two years later. The mother told police she learned about it while arguing with Adem about female circumcision. The mother told police that she told Adem she didn’t want that to happen to their daughter, but Adem implied the circumcision had already occurred.
I remember finding out about this in college and it just disgusts me. I do find it a little fishy that the mother claims not to have noticed that her daughter had been circumsized for 2 years!

I JUST read an article about a girl in Manhattan who’s been in the US since age 2, but who was arrested because of an expired child visa and held under suspicion for being a possible suicide bomber. She’s 18, and now she faces being deported to Guinea, where she faces female circumcision – even though she’s grown up in the US. Article is here.

I wonder if she could seek asylum here since it is a practice that is illegal in the US?
This whole thing is being discussed in one of the message boards I frequent and a lady there mentioned how she had a coworker from Africa who refused to marry a woman, unless she cut off her labia and clitoris. I think he said something like it was necessary because if his wife knew how good sex was, she would cheat on him – or something like that. How sad.
